Lobsterpiece Theatre is an ongoing puppetry project that I am currently developing in conjunction with an expert in marine biology.
Imagine a struggling and largely forgotten Florida tourist shop on a dusty highway just north of Tampa Bay. The kind of place that sells sponges and ships made out of seashells in small bottles. The main attraction is the Lobsterpiece Theatre; a small theatrical show in which the denizens of the deep produce the works of Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams and Eugene O’Neil, while also addressing contemporary cultural issues, discussing their own varied experiences, and shedding light on the problems faced by the world’s oceans. Add in their struggle to appeal to a wider audience despite declining attendance and their frequent attempts to “sex up” their shows with musical numbers, impressive (by aquatic standards) special effects, and the occasional burlesque dancer (always seen from the knees down- because small stage- but wearing aquatically themed shoes).
