The Miracle Worker by William Gibson
Directed by Kate Buckley
Costume Design by Joscelyne Oktabetz
Lighting Design by Kenneth Foster
Set in the Keller household in Tuscumbia, Alabama, this design needed to be true to the period accuracy that the script indicates. However, in an effort not to visually overwhelm Helen’s journey, I felt that this “reality” could be altered slightly. I became interested in the notion of doors and windows as things that reveal and conceal – similar to the notion of eyes as “windows to the soul”. So I created an environment without walls – a world without barriers, but rather opportunities. The design became a complicated puzzle of architectural details that Helen learns to navigate as she discovers hope.
